Good Songs for Sad Days

It's a thundery night here in Chicago and I have been in a funk of sorts recently so I decided it was about time to get this old blog up and running again. I have been listening to tons of music recently and that always seems to get me through all the wackness, the wooblies, the general jubbie blues of life. So take a look at these songs I have posted. Hopefully one of them will bring you a little joy or peace during your own funk period. Enjoy.

Damien Rice - Rootless Tree
I am going to post two versions of this song... Why? Cus I can dammit. And also for some good reasons. The first is because the album version of Rootless Tree is a song that I can listen to over and over. Every time I belt out the course I feel a little bit more peaceful. When I am in a bad mood I just blast this as loud as I can and enjoy. The second version is the Abby Road live acoustic version and it is so vastly different from the album version and so beautiful that I just had to post it. Honestly every time I hear them sing "Fuck you and all we've been through" on this version I just want to shed a tear for how beautiful they make that expletive sound.

Plus 44- No it isn't

Okay so this next song is really depressing in that, I hate you but I really do care, kind of way. But it is totally rocking and once again when I am feeling down or have lost someone or generally just need to know I am not along this song definitely pulls me out of it.

Matthew Perryman Jones - Save You

What can I say about Matthew Perryman Jones that you can't figure out for yourself? This guy is just phenomenal I have never heard someone sing with so much conviction before.

John Eddie- Your Love

My dad introduced me to John Eddie years ago. However, he is not very well known. I think his concerts are part comedy show part great music. So I put the live version up so you can kind of see the magic. I do love this song.

Sia- Breathe Me

I actually just heard this song today for the first time. I really don't enjoy the rest of Sia's stuff but something about this just caught me somewhere in between my ears and heart. I can't put a finger on it but I like it.

Company of Thieves - Death of Communication

To compare this band to anyone else is a shame but I am constantly doing it. I personally think this song is great because it is rocking and the lead singer is awesome. Oh wait and the lyrics.

Little Birdy- Brother

I have personally always loved loved loved Little Birdy. Kat Steele is kind of my idle. I had her hair cut for a long time. Anyway... I love what they do because they are both sentimental and original. I feel like you can relate to them and the themes in their music but I never hear their songs the same way twice.

Wale- Pretty Girls

Nothing like a feminist rap song to lift you up right? I have no idea why I love this song. Maybe it is because I am a pretty girl and I can clap clap like this. Oh and Wale is talented. Maybe... Anyway "Ugly Girls Quiet Pretty Girls Riot!"

Darren Hayes- Popular

I have to say that I was a huge Savage Garden fan (Don't judge me okay?) I cried when they broke up (Again... No judging.) But now Darren Hayes is back with an infectious pop hit better than any Savage Garden song (Okay almost kinda not quite but he's getting there... It was a nostalgic time. ) It makes me feel like dancing no matter what my mood.

Justin Bieber- Baby

So I can bust some sweet moves to this song. I dared a few of my friends to blare this song while driving and see how they feel. Consensus.... Amazing. (Once again don't judge me)

And for those of you too kewl for school here is a death metal version that will blow your effing mind!

Flee the Seen- 300 Voices At the Liberty Hall

Okay so I felt like I had to redeem myself after those last few songs. This song has a great message and really does pick me up out of a funk. Too bad Flee the Seen is no more. Oh man that'll put me back into a funk every time.

The Twenty Twos- Another Day

For those of you who have no seen Grandma's Boy a million times commence watching now. For those of you who have here is an awesome track from the sound track that makes me feel amazing every time I hear it.

Christa Borden- Empty Bottles

You ever realize something is over and you are like "What the eff happened?" Well I like to listen to this after that happens and realize that things are all good as long as you are drunk. Just kidding. But seriously I do love to belt this out randomly.

So anyway it is getting close to midnight and I am not feeling in a funk anymore. I hope you enjoy these songs and I would love to know what you listen to when you are in a bad mood. So comment on this blog and let me know.

Beth Orton

With an indescribable voice and a definite charm Beth Orton came into my life via my crazy uncle. I have to say that through out the years my uncle has brought me some of the most interesting music I have ever heard. Some of it good some of it bad most of it weird in some way. Beth Orton happens to be one of the good from the endless stack of CDs he has given me. Why do I love Beth Orton? Well for starters she is experimental without being ridiculous (in a bad way) she manages to create a unique sound without making me want to sit for hours and hate her first. I think it could be her voice or her spot on fit to my life lyrics that makes me love her I can't not choose just which. She is quotable and beautiful and sings about being strong in the face of love and conquest and what is great is that you just don't notice those things at first. She has a definite stoner vibe without having to get high to listen and understand where she is coming from. And this my friends is why you should listen to Beth Orton. I really can not describe the ways she has changed my perceptions of music and how I think about listening to things but she definitely has. So check her out she is indeed wonderful.

My favorite album of hers is Daybreaker
And my favorite songs Ali's Waltz, Thinking About Tomorrow and Concrete Sky

As always I am including her myspace, her site and some info.

Tired but I ain't sleeping
Thinking about some sad affair
And why i should be leaving cos some of these thoughts
Only seem to take me outta here
These habits are so hard to break and they're so easy to make
These habits are so hard to break and they're so easy to make

Thinking about tomorrow tired form all the time I spare
On what I still believe in
When none of my talk ever seems to get me anywhere
These habits are so hard to break and they're so easy to make
These habits are so hard to break and they're so easy to make

So long bye my friend so long
So long will it ever happen again
You know that I've been waiting for you
I've been creating for you so long
You know the light ain't fading form you
Nothing could save me form you, so long

Tired but I ain't dreaming falling into solid air
And why I must be leaving or one of these days
I'm gonna pull out all my hair
These habits are so hard to break and they're so easy to make
These habits are so hard to break and they're so easy to make
So long, bye my friend so long so long will it ever happen again
You know that I've been waiting for you
I've been creating for you so long
You know the light ain't fading from you
Nothing could save me form you so long

Faith has a good side still everyone she ever loved they all turned bad
Constance his own way of breathing and you know
You couldn't will him to survive
Couldn't will him if you if you tried, and there's a concrete sky
Falling from the trees again and you know now why
It's not coming round too soon
It's harder than a heartbreak too

I've seen your good side but I still don't know just what it is
That you might want
See you've got your own way of moving
And you know you could save me
Save your soul, I'll save some of you
Save my soul, feel like I'm falling fell like I'm falling
And there's a concrete sky
Falling from the trees again and you know now why
It's not coming round too soon, it's harder than a heartbreak too
It's tough enough what love will do

So much time gets lost in my mind
But I know now what I must rely on
It's a sound and forgetting, ain't the worst thing
I've been out walking don't do too much talking
Wouldn't take too much time, wouldn't take all your time
Cos it's as precious as mine Save my soul, I'll save some for you
Save my soul feel like I'm falling feel like I'm falling
And there's a concrete sky
Falling from the trees again and you know now why
It's not coming round too soon, it's harder than a heartbreak too
It's tough enough what love will do
And you're as precious as mine
And you're as precious as mine...

Alex Henry- Sketch

When I was in High School I was desperately in love with a guy named Alex Henry. Now Alex is an underground rapper in the Seattle area. His recent CD The Nightmare Man is being hustled on street corners around the Seattle Renton area and he has reached a little of acclaim at the very least with his friends. Alex Henry's style is multifaceted he jumps between dance club music to hardcore rock rap. He is extremely talented in mixing genres and a lot of his music and I do indeed enjoy his lyrics and what he raps about. He tends to be funny and talk about life in Seattle and where we grew up. All I can say is that I have mad love for Alex because of what he does. Check him out.

As always here is his myspace.

Since Alex AKA Sketch has not made any music videos yet I recommend the following songs which are on his myspace:

Movin On Feat Renton
My Underground
Row by Row

All of it is good those are just my favorites.

The Empyres Pretty Evil Little Regime

When I was in High School I had high hopes of being in a band some day but I was highly untalented in the music department. My friend Luke however, convinced me that if I could learn guitar that he would be in a band with me and we would sing all the songs I write. However, I cold never master the guitar but Luke (the blonde guy in the photo) has moved on to form a band of his own. Hailing from Renton Washington the members of The Empyres Pretty Evil Regime mix a fusion of different styles and musicality. It features rap as well as vocals and some really great compositions. What I love about these guys, besides that I am friends with the guitarist and singer, is that they represent what people with drive and talent can do even with limited resources. They represent a fun and free style that is different but reminiscent of something old. Listen to their lyrics and listen to the beats and guitar. They are really great. Since this is a indie band it is really hard to find there music online as well as information about them.

As always I am leaving there myspace.

R.I.P. The Twenty Twos- Led by three female vocalists and featuring a make drummer this band broke the mold by playing mostly upbeat punk. Though they had a really great and cohesive album their record label left them stranded on tour (F you Sony) and they disbanded shortly after so they could pay off the debt the incurred from said tour. Needless to say they need to get back together so they can be resigned.

R.I.P Flee The Scene- One of the greatest punk/screamo/emo/hard rock bands I have ever heard I am not typically into this kind of music but they really spoke to me and they also broke up for no apparent reason other than they were tired of making music. This unique song fronted by a really talented female singer made for an electric combination that I guess just wasn't meant to be.

R.I.P. Something Corporate- Yes Andrew McMahon has gone on to bigger and better things but I still have a special place in my heart for his first band Something Corporate. With great instrumental and nine minute long songs they just speak to me. It is sad that they no longer make music together.

R.I.P. The Thurston Revival- Poetic one man bands which make you thirst for more are rare to find. The Thurston Revival was not only one of those he is a fallen one. He was never officially picked up by a record label and should have been and for some reason he has just stopped making music all together. There is no real news about him and it is really hard to find any of his stuff (even me the internet queen can not find a single site with one of his songs on it.) but if you manage to take a listen it is really great.

Best Break Up Songs

I am going to Try something new by making a playlist post where I leave links to certain songs that best represent a theme. This time it is Best Break Up Songs.

1. +44 "No It Isn't" ( I think that these lyrics say a lot about not just breakups but abandoning relationships in general. It is rumored that Mark Hoppus wrote this song about Tom Delong when Blink-182 broke up. The reason it is titled No It Isn't is in reference to this rumor. Mark Hoppus wanted to make clear to his fans but I say "Me thinks the lady doth protest too much." I really love this song and it is great to just say "Eff you." Make sure to click the hyper links with each video.)

2. Dashboard Confessional- "Rapid Hope Loss" (This is just a personal favorite I think the best part of this song is the line "So much for all the promises you made they severed you well and now they are wasted on me." Ignore the front man Chris' horrible hair this is the only video where I have seen it like that.)

3. Damien Rice- "Rootless Tree" ( I have never heard someone sing the F word so beautifully.)

4. Kat Micucci- "Just Say When" (Kate Micucci has some really great and up beat songs and I love the everyone of them but this one is by far my favorite and completely fit the theme.)

5. The Twenty Twos- "Touch and Go" (Oh the Twenty Twos you left to soon. I wish that their record label hadn't of screwed them over so they could make more songs like this. Such great lyrics and arrangements and overall bad ass chicks.)

6. Earlimart- "Happy Alone" (The title pretty much says it all and I am glad someone sang about loving yourself and being fine with being alone.)

7. Wham "Careless Whisper" (<--- Yea I went there.)

8. Don Henley - "Forgiveness" (I remember hearing this at a wedding when I was around 9 or 10 and thought it was odd because this is definitely a breakup song.)

9. Tina Parol "Who's Got Your Money?" (When your man screws you over do it back and make it hurt his pocket. Thanks Tina Parol this is a girl breakup anthem.)

10. Justin Bieber- "Baby" ( I love to roll my windows down and blare this song and sing at the top of my lungs. I don't care what anyone thinks. )

11. Tritt Travis "Here's Quarter, Call Someone Who Cares." (My manager at work asked me to put this one here. So I complied. ahah.)

12. She & Him- "Thieves" (Requested by Ashley Sanchez)

13. Something Corporate- "Konstantine" (Nine minutes long but an amazing song. This has got to be one of my favorite songs ever.)

14. The Killers- "Mr. Brightside"

15. My Chemical Romance- "I'm Not Okay."

Christa Borden

On late night drives home from my job 96.5 actually plays unheard of music. That is how I found out about the next artist. I was driving home around midnight after my shift at Hell's Motel and I heard Christa Borden on the radio. Now this is one of the few times that song id has failed me horribly but I ended up finding her because I googled her lyrics.

Christa Borden is very unknown I don't know if that is due to a lack of self promotion or because people aren't interested but she is actually fairly talented. Her first album I Rhyme With Orange has just come out and besides decent song writing chops she has a great voice so check her out.

As usual I am leaving her myspace and official page.

EMPTY BOTTLES Lyrics

Wake up to a hangover, an empty shell of me
Doubles are never a good idea after one or two or three a.m.
I called you when I sobered up but I should have known
You’d have better things to do with your time than listen to me
Crying and begging you to come home

It’s a little too late
The buzz is gone
We drank it down fast it didn’t last that long
We got high for a while
On more than we could swallow
And now your love is just an empty bottle, an empty bottle

Dried my tears and made some coffee
Washed these shadows off my face
Still can’t sleep in this big bed we used to share
I think its time for me to move out of this place
Still can’t believe its over and there is nothing I can do
But I know that you’re in love with her
And somewhere in my broken heart I’m happy for you

It’s a little too late
The buzz is gone
We drank it down fast it didn’t last that long
We got high for a while
On more than we could swallow
And now your love is just an empty bottle, an empty bottle

I’m so parched my lips are dry
Your desert love wasteland of lies
You quenched your thirst on my demise
I swallowed every tear I cried

It’s a little too late
The buzz is gone
We drank it down fast it didn’t last that long
We got high for a while
On more than we could swallow
And now your love is just an empty bottle, an empty bottle
